Sonne & Ceylon is a boutique, family-run travel company with over 40 years of combined experience in hospitality. Our name brings together two worlds: Sonne, the German word for “sun,” and Ceylon, the historic name for Sri Lanka. Together, they reflect warmth, light, heritage, and a living connection between Europe and the island we call home.
Founded by Amila De Alwis, Sonne & Ceylon was shaped by a deep love for nature-based travel and a desire to share Sri Lanka’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture responsibly. Amila’s New Zealand citizenship stands as a meaningful achievement in nature tourism, reflecting international standards, global perspective, and a strong commitment to ethical, well-managed travel experiences. Living between Austria and Sri Lanka allows the business to blend European expectations of quality with the genuine warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.
Sonne & Ceylon is a registered travel business with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and operates under official regulations to ensure every client is professionally guided, well looked after, and able to travel with confidence. We believe every journey should feel personal, safe, and memorable – whether it’s a quiet hill-country morning, a wildlife encounter, or time spent along Sri Lanka’s sunlit shores.
Founded by Amila De Alwis, Sonne & Ceylon was built on a love for authentic travel and the desire to share Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and culture with the world. Living between Austria and Sri Lanka gives our family a unique perspective that blends European standards of quality with the genuine warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.
As a tourist board-registered travel agency, we are fully licensed to operate in Sri Lanka, ensuring safe, reliable, and professional travel experiences. We believe every journey should feel personal, secure, and unforgettable. From sunlit beaches to quiet hill country mornings, each experience is designed with care, combining attention to detail with a deep understanding of what makes a trip truly meaningful.
Sri Lanka is a land of contrasts and discoveries. In a country smaller than many cities you can travel from misty highlands to sun-kissed beaches, from dense jungles teeming with wildlife to ancient cities where history lives in stone and fresco. Every region offers its own rhythm, stories and flavours making the island endlessly captivating.
The country’s cultural richness is evident in its festivals, cuisine and daily life. People of many religions, languages and traditions coexist in vibrant communities. Temples, churches, mosques and shrines punctuate the landscape reflecting centuries of interaction, trade and shared heritage. Local crafts, music, dance and culinary traditions provide an authentic connection to the island’s living culture making every visit more than sightseeing, it becomes an experience of life itself.
Sri Lanka’s natural diversity is matched by its accessibility. Well-developed transport networks from trains winding through tea estates to highways connecting cities and towns make exploration comfortable and straightforward. Hospitality is deeply ingrained with a focus on personal care and connection ensuring that travellers feel welcomed at every step.
The island invites you to slow down and feel its heartbeat. Whether it is spotting elephants in the wild, tasting spices in a village kitchen, walking along a misty hilltop trail or watching the sun dip into the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka rewards curiosity, adventure and reflection in equal measure.
It is a place where every journey offers both wonder and insight, where history, nature and human warmth combine to create memories that stay long after you leave. Sri Lanka is not just a destination, it is a feeling, a story and a rhythm to immerse yourself in.
Sonne & Ceylon began when Amila started helping friends, particularly German-speaking travelers, plan meaningful holidays in Sri Lanka. What started as simple advice soon grew into a passion for crafting journeys that felt thoughtful, personal, and deeply connected to place.
Having lived in Europe for several years, Amila developed a strong understanding of European travellers’ expectations, travel styles, and values. This experience, combined with a lifelong connection to Sri Lanka, inspired the creation of a travel company that naturally bridges both worlds.
Alongside running Sonne & Ceylon, Amila is also a student at the University of Salzburg, continuing to deepen academic knowledge in tourism, sustainability, and international perspectives. This ongoing education plays a key role in shaping the company’s forward-thinking approach and its focus on responsible, well-curated travel.
The De Alwis family has long-standing roots in hospitality, with experience across Austria, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. While this background provides a strong foundation, Sonne & Ceylon today is driven primarily by Amila’s vision, one that prioritises authenticity, professionalism, and genuine cultural exchange.
Today, the company offers tailor-made journeys that go beyond sightseeing. From exploring Colombo in an open-air jeep to discovering ancient cities, hidden beaches, and natural landscapes, every experience is designed to connect travellers with the real Sri Lanka.
At its heart, Sonne & Ceylon remains proudly family-run and guided by care, integrity, and a love for meaningful travel. Every journey tells a story, of heritage, nature, and the quiet joy of exploring with intention.
To awaken a deeper connection to Sri Lanka through travel that celebrates its people, its landscapes, and its culture. We imagine journeys that leave footprints in hearts as well as on the earth, journeys that inspire understanding, compassion, and curiosity.
To design experiences that are personal, immersive, and unforgettable. Every itinerary is tailor-made, blending our European perspective with local insight so that each traveller can touch the soul of Sri Lanka in a way that resonates with them.
